Kol Ami — The Northern Virginia Reconstructionist Community

Participation & Volunteer Opportunities

Kol Ami prides itself on being a participatory community – on the bimah, in the classroom, and at social events.

Volunteerism creates close bonds amongst the membership and from a practical matter allows us to keep our overhead costs low.

Hosting either a Friday evening Oneg or a Shabbat morning Kiddush is a responsibility we all share.  Every member of the community should do this, or its equivalent, at least twice a year.  Some other opportunities to “pitch in” and help one another are listed below.  This list is by no means all inclusive.  It should simply serve to illustrate the wide variety of activities we enjoy together and which you may participate in.  Additions to this list are sought and relished:

  • Leading services
  • Aliyah during services – Torah reading, blessings, haftorah reading, blessings, Torah assistance, ark assistance
  • Teaching Hebrew
  • Leading discussion groups on history or relevant issues
  • Teaching our children, providing Bar Mitzvah training
  • Participation in religious events – Pesach second night seder, Shavuout, Sukkot, Chanukah, Purim, etc
  • Planning and participating in social events – dinners, outside events
  • Community Leadership – steering committee, strategic planning committee, ritual committee, children’s education committee, tikkun olam committee, care & concern committee and adult education committee
