Kol Ami is proud to be co-sponsoring this event which is being offered by the Haberman Institute of Jewish Studies.
Phyllis K. Leffler, Professor Emerita at The University of Virginia in the field of public history, will be giving this talk. Leffler’s talk focuses on the Jews of Virginia as a microcosm of Jewish experiences across the South, and in many cases, across the nation. It is a story of colonial-era Sephardic Jews from the Iberian Peninsula and nineteenth-century immigrants who arrived initially from the Germanies and later from Poland and Russia. It is a story of involvement in business, government, the arts, and education. It is a story of educational attainment and economic success. It is often a story of assimilation and an acceptance of the status quo and norms of the white societies of privilege they embraced. But it is also a story of discrimination and exclusion in times when white supremacy rears its ugly head.

Join Rabbi Gilah as Kol Ami and Shirat HaNefesh come together for a Shabbat service and important Rabbi's Table. This is our last joint service with Shirat HaNefesh for the year; Rabbi Gilah will be leaving Shirat HaNefesh in June. At 11 am, Alan Ronkin, Regional Director of the American Jewish Committee for Washington, DC, will take the Rabbi's Table to present a groundbreaking report on antisemitism in America. This is the first time both American Jews and the general public have been surveyed about antisemitism in a way that highlights differing perceptions about the extent of the problem. There will be ample time for a robust discussion about the report and what it means both for the Jewish community and others subject to discrimination. Join our Shavuot celebration on Sunday evening at 8 pm, May 16, as we close out the counting of the omer with our dynamo Omer Team, and arrive at our destination -- the holiday of Shavuot and the giving of the Torah. Willa Siegel will offer a brief reflection on the book of Ruth, traditionally read on Shavuot. And echoing Ruth's experience of joining the Jewish people, Rabbi Gilah and Cameron Vanore will lead us in a discussion of conversion experiences -- positive, negative, neutral. What brings you close to Judaism? What feels distancing? Folks attending will be invited to contribute their own reflections.

Peter's music is gentle and, at the same time, soul nourishing. Herb Levy and Leslie Lesner co-lead. For more information, click the above event link.
Our lives revolve around transitions. Some are tied to ritual, but many significant transitions, however, are not: retirement, becoming a grandparent, completing a time of healing or recovery, marking the anniversary of a loved ones passing, becoming an empty nester, graduation, job changes, a milestone birthday, weaning a child, or even making an important decision. Some transitions are about letting go or moving through a challenging time, some are about celebrating a milestone, and some are about personal preparation for what is yet to come.
The workshop will include time for grounding guided meditation, text study and an interactive ritual creation activity.
