Summer will be at its height, and, in the Jewish cycle of the year, it will be a powerful time – in the month of Av, called the time when our joy reduces (but is never eliminated), and a few days before Tisha b’Av, when we mourn the destruction of our ancient temples. We’ll contemplate how to be joyful even when our joy decreases; study parsha Chukat, when Miriam dies, Aaron dies, Moses hits the rock instead of speaking to it as God asked him to, but we’re joyful and hopeful anyway; sing and pray, and enjoy being together.
Richard Ruth will be bringing his famous potato salad for the oneg; hope you’ll also bring something wonderful, beginning with your summery self. We’ll be in the Chapel.
