Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington

Arlington, VA 22204
Two sets of parents and children will be leyning Torah — Anne Salzberg and Maya Koch, and Mike and Bradley Jawer. We’ll discuss Solace Through Shiva. We’ll examine the traditional laws related to Shiva and the emotional valence they carry, and explore their relevance for our own time. How have our practices changed to accommodate in the American context? We’ll briefly examine the source of the practice, the meaning of isolation in the home, and the distinction between the first three days after a death and the remainder of the week. We’ll also explore American Shiva practices — when did Shiva turn into three days … or just one? Have American Shivas become more like a wake and less like a Shiva? When you’ve attended a Shiva, what has helped bring comfort and healing, and what hasn’t worked so well? What happens when Shiva becomes primarily an evening event with food for the visitors? Should Shiva practices be different for different types of losses? Please bring a dairy/vegetarian meal to share. We’ll be in the Chapel.
