Kol Ami High Holidays 5780 Tikkun Olam Project
The High Holidays are a great time to think about Tikkun Olam, repair of the world. Kol Ami traditionally does a congregation-wide Tikkun Olam project at thie High Holdays. This year, in keeping with Kol Ami’s social action focus on immigrant and refugees issue, we are running a collection drive to collect necessary household items for refugee families resettling in our area.
Items collected will be delivered to the Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSS/NCA), a State Department designated organization working with the United National High Commissioner Refugees to offer people the freedom to start a new life through the refugee resettlement program. For refugees fleeing war and persecution, resettlement in a new country is often the last resort, providing a legal and physical haven to rebuild their lives. Only 1% of refugees are resettled to a third country. Up until 2018, LSS/NCA welcomed more than 1,000 refugees each year. Although current administration policies are limiting the number of refugees being accepted, LSS/NCA is still helping families resettle here in the DMV area.
You can contribute by bringing to any of Kol Ami’s High Holidays Services items LSS/NCA accepts to help refugee families get a start on their new lives. The biggest needs are currently for linens, towels, trash cans, laundry detergent, diapers, shampoo, and cleaning supplies. A full list of items needed and accepted for donation can be found at: https://lssnca.org/get_involved/wish-list/refugee_wishlist.html.
Please donate only items are new or like new, and are on the list of accepted donations you can find at the link above.
