Kol Ami — The Northern Virginia Reconstructionist Community

Care, Concern & Inclusion at Kol Ami

A Caring, Inclusive Community

At Kol Ami, we believe a strong community is one that is both inclusive and caring. We are deeply committed to creating a congregation where people of all backgrounds, identities, and circumstances feel welcomed, valued, and supported.

We see God’s face in everyone: Jews by birth, Jews by choice, interfaith families; male, female, transgender, or non-binary; all races and ethnic backgrounds; single, married, divorced, separated, or partnered; straight, gay, lesbian, or bisexual; babies, seniors, and any age in between; fully-abled, disabled, or a person of differing abilities.

As a Reconstructionist congregation rooted in inclusiveness and radical welcoming, Kol Ami offers worship that is egalitarian, interactive, and grounded in both tradition and innovation. We seek to create sacred space that is participatory, meaningful, and accessible, honoring the many ways people connect to Jewish life.

Accessible and Connected at Kol Ami

Everyone is welcome to participate in worship, learning, and community life at Kol Ami. Accessibility—physical, emotional, and spiritual—is a shared responsibility and an ongoing commitment.

Our congregation meets at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, a facility fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The building includes ground-level wheelchair access to the Sanctuary, ramps and an elevator for access throughout the space, designated accessible parking near the entrance, and automatic door openers in both the main entrance and accessible restrooms. We are grateful to share UUCA’s guiding principle that “All Are Welcome Here.”

Most services, minyans, and educational programs are also accessible online, offering multiple ways to engage meaningfully and comfortably.

Creating an inclusive and accessible environment is an evolving process led by our Care & Concern/Inclusion Committee. In addition to physical accommodations, we work to support individuals with chemical sensitivities and food allergies by requesting scent-free attendance and clearly labeling ingredients when food is served.

A Radically Welcoming Congregation

Kol Ami is grounded in the Reconstructionist value of radical welcoming. We strive to create a community where all people can feel at home and participate fully in Jewish life.

We proudly affirm and celebrate our LGBTQ+ members and families, honoring each person’s identity and contributions to our communal life. Our goal is to foster an environment where everyone’s presence is respected and where all can engage meaningfully in worship, learning, and community.

In 2017, our congregation unanimously affirmed that our ritual and prayer services are fully and equally open to both Jewish and non-Jewish members. We are proud to be among the few congregations to formally uphold this practice as an expression of our values.

Supporting One Another

At Kol Ami, care for one another is a shared responsibility. Our Care & Concern/Inclusion Committee is dedicated to supporting members during times of illness, loss, and life transition. Support may include outreach to those who are homebound, assistance navigating social services, or simply offering presence and compassion during difficult moments. The committee also facilitates an evening of shiva for mourners and maintains Yahrzeit and Healing lists for members and their families.

Kol Ami hosts an annual healing service, bringing the community together to offer emotional and spiritual support through prayer, reflection, and connection.  In February of each year, Kol Ami celebrates Jewish Disability Awareness & Inclusion Month (JDAIM) with a special Inclusion service on Shabbat morning.

At Kol Ami, inclusion and care are not just values—they are central to who we are and how we show up for one another.
