Kol Ami — The Northern Virginia Reconstructionist Community
Kol Ami has several teams and committees dedicated to supporting our community and enhancing our congregation. Read below to learn more about what they do.
Much of the life of our congregation depends on the work of these volunteer-run teams and committees. In addition to hosting services and events, serving on a committee is a vitally important part of membership in Kol Ami. Please pick an area of interest from the list below and contact us to learn how to get involved.
Adult Learning Committee
The Adult Learning Committee works to broaden and deepen Jewish learning within our community, fostering a culture of lifelong learning among Kol Ami members. We’re open to suggestions for speakers, topics, classes, and workshops!
Care & Concern/Inclusion Committee
The Care & Concern/Inclusion Committee provides comfort and assistance to members facing life challenges such as illness, disability, grief, or loneliness and helps ensure that all members can fully participate in congregational life. The committee maintains important community support lists (e.g., Yahrzeit, healing, resources), coordinates meal assistance, helps with Shivas, and offers annual healing and inclusion services. The committee’s Inclusion Team also works to improve accessibility at Kol Ami and reinforces that all are welcome in the congregation.
Family Holiday Team
The Family Holiday Team helps coordinate family-oriented celebrations of multiple Jewish holidays throughout the year – from Sukkot to Hanukkah, Tu-B’Shvat to Lag B’Omer. The team works with the parents of children and teens to organize and host fun and engaging programs that foster deeper connections with our Jewish heritage and values.
Jewish Children’s Education Program (JCEP) Team
The JCEP team works with our Rabbi to organize, hire teachers for, and support the education of our children in our Hebrew school. The team also organizes parent socials and learning opportunities to help foster a cohesive community of families within the congregation. .
Members & Visitors Committee
The Members & Visitors Committee extends a warm welcome to new and prospective members, helping them find a meaningful place within our congregation. Committee members contact members to learn about needs and how we can meet them, and reach out to departing members for feedback on their experience. Each spring, the team fosters the Nominations process, encouraging congregants to consider leadership roles within Kol Ami.
Ritual Committee
The Ritual Committee plans and oversees Kol Ami’s religious services and holiday observances, working closely with our Rabbi. Responsibilities include coordinating the ritual calendar, guiding service formats, addressing kashrut and food-related concerns, and maintaining holiday customs. Members with an interest in lay-led services or ritual leadership are encouraged to participate.
Tikkun Olam Committee
The Tikkun Olam Committee leads Kol Ami’s efforts to put Jewish values into action through service and social justice. The committee identifies meaningful volunteer opportunities, organizes hands-on projects, and partners with local organizations to support those in need. Through initiatives such as food and clothing drives, environmental projects, and advocacy efforts, the committee helps our community live out our commitment to compassion, justice, and repairing the world.
Security Committee
The Security Committee develops and executes plans to help keep our congregation safe. The Security Committee manages and implements security personnel, procedures, training, grants, engagement with county and state police, and coordination with other safety and security organizations.
Steering Committee
Kol Ami is governed by its officers and Steering Committee, which includes the chairs of the above committees as well as at-large members. The Steering Committee guides the operations of the congregation and makes major decisions on policies and approach. Current Steering Committee officers and members are listed here.
