Reaching the age of B-Mitzvah is a meaningful moment for a child, their family, and the congregation. Whether or not a formal ceremony is held, we celebrate each child’s growth—through Hebrew School (JCEP), participation in services, and their increasing connection to Jewish life. After becoming Bar or Bat Mitzvah, teens are encouraged to stay involved at Kol Ami and explore Jewish teen programs.
Inclusive and Individual Approach
Kol Ami honors every child as an individual. To be inclusive of children who identify as male, female, non-binary, or queer, we use the term B-Mitzvah. We aim for every student to experience this milestone as spiritually meaningful, recognize their learning accomplishments, and feel supported on the path to deeper Jewish knowledge. During the B-Mitzvah year, students and families meet with the rabbi to reflect on the milestone and the new responsibilities it brings.
Ceremony and Creative Expression
For families choosing a B-Mitzvah ceremony, services follow traditional lines while welcoming creative expression. We are mindful of each child’s comfort with Hebrew, public performance, and individual background. Students may:
Lead prayers during the Shabbat service
Chant from the Torah
Share insights on their Torah portion
Complete a mitzvah project
Accompany Kol Ami musicians or write poetry
Preparation and Support
B-Mitzvah preparation begins with an initial meeting with the rabbi, followed by additional meetings throughout the year. Tutors in the DMV area can be recommended for weekly preparation. A rehearsal with the rabbi is held the week of the service to help students and families feel ready and confident.
