Kol Ami — The Northern Virginia Reconstructionist Community

Tikkun Olam

Tikkun Olam

L’takein olam b’malchut Shaddai  (To repair the world so it manifests the divine)

Kol Ami members participate in a wide range of social justice and community service efforts, including literacy tutoring, ESL coaching, courtroom monitoring, and other forms of direct support. Over the years, our community has come together for many projects, including sandwich-making with the UUCA, marching for immigrant rights, donation drives, stream cleanups, and invasive species removal.

From 2022 to 2025, one of our most significant sustained initiatives was the K.A.R.E. Project (Kol Ami Afghan Refugee Engagement). Working closely with NoVa RAFT (Resettling Afghan Families Together) and Lutheran Church Charities, we supported several Afghan refugee families as they settled in Northern Virginia.

Volunteers helped families navigate daily life by assisting with job searches, government applications, utilities, and housing. Members also provided transportation to food distribution centers and medical appointments, coordinated with immigration attorneys, and organized fundraising and donation drives to ease their transition and build community connections.

Today, Kol Ami’s Tikkun Olam Committee continues to share opportunities for social action and to encourage members to come together in support of meaningful projects that reflect our Jewish values and our commitment to repairing the world.
