A Positive Aging Blog

by Harriet Epstein

Change is in the air.  We have just welcomed a New Year.  The warm summer weather suddenly departed in a rustle of leaves, a burst of cool air, and days of gentle rain, the reaction to a powerful hurricane that badly damaged SW Florida and Coastal South Carolina. As older people, we occasionally remember our childhood, and how different the world was then; our prime of life, when we had important work to do in our homes and our careers; and our gradual change into people with older bodies and minds, as we now seek new uses for our talents, new friends as companions, and new ideas to ponder.  We are fortunate to live in a part of the earth which has four seasons, to which we must accommodate.

No matter how hard we may wish that some of our loved ones were still alive, some of our favorite restaurants had not gone out of business, or some of our abilities were not slowly waning, these changes are all part of God’s plan. Everything is always changing except the Eternal.  After some time to grieve, we must move on, because there is still a lot of living to do, a lot of joy to reap.  Let us be cognizant of these changes and work with our families to enjoy the present and prepare for a time when we may need more help and care.  Accept change into your life!

Wishing you a Shana Tovah and a happy, healthy 5783, full of positive change!
